MA Practice One - Digital Darkroom Effects

I have thought about exploring darkroom photography and photograms. I have always been interested in Man Ray and his photograms, I have recently discovered Anna Atkins and her exploration of dark room photography in the 1800's, I think that to be able to recreate this sort of images to depict detail and texture could be a really informative excersise. This would also give me more imagery to begin to create prints with.

I want to further explore this idea and begin to play around in the darkroom, I want to organise an induction into the darkroom soon. In the meantime, I have started to experiement with digitally recreating the two tone effect that is produced with darkroom photograms.

By using a gradient map on photoshop, I have been able to create images flooded with tone using two chosen colours from my pallete. I created a small range of these images to show the different effects I could express, I have currated them on my MA sketchbook page. I think that by adding colour rather than using black and white, this removes some of the noticable detail in my imagery but highlights shape and adds an appealing filter which sort of simlifies the photograph.
