MA Practice One - Documentary Photography

I am almost certain that my definition of using photography as a documentation is different to other photographers, when looking for examples of 'documentary photography' I am faced with dark, raw images of cultural differences, street photography and depressing places - I expect this is mostly for shock value for news stories but I want to look at a more light hearted form of documentary photography.

One example of this Vivian Maiers collections of photographs. Her work is considered an archive of its own. In 2007, a huge secret stash of her work was discovered at an auction in a locker, hundreds of negatives which hadn't been developed that document her life and the streets of new york.

I think that the reason Vivian Maier work resides with me is that it is said that, 'she would comb the streets of the Big Apple refining her artistic craft' (http://www.vivianmaier.com/about-vivian-maier/), I think I find similarities within this concept as I have thousands of images I have taken because the subject interested me, I have collected and collated files on my laptop as I am unsure why they interest me and what to do with them.

However, I am describing my initial photographic research and collection of imagery of textures and structures as documentation. I have started looking at the orgins of documentary photography, 'realistically reproducing impressions of actuality' ( Price, D. (2009). Thinking about Photography. In: Wells, L Photography: A Critical Introduction. 4th ed. Oxon: Routledge. 18-19. ), and the idea that photographs were taken at face value and believed as factual evidence.

I have started to experiment with this idea by cropping images and editing photographs to express the sections of my subject that I want to document. I have also considered the idea that photography no longer 'directly replicates circumstances' and the authenticity of the photograph. With this in mind I have begun by editting and over exacggerating textures and structures by using photoshop and digital collage, this is something that I want to experiement with further.
