MA Practice Two - Deanna Petherbridge at Whitworth Art Gallery

Whilst visiting the Andy Warhol exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery, I came across an artist collection of works inspired heavily by architecture, war and cities. The mood within the paintings and drawings are very dark and industrial.

Deanna Petherbridge creates incredibly detailed drawings on a large scale. I was fascinated by the way that Petherbridge represented different textures of surfaces through drawing and mark making.

During practice one I found that I was having a lot of trouble trying to capture texture in an accurate way and became disappointed with my attempts at recreating texture with marks and abstract painting as I am used to drawing very accurately.

The way that this artist has created translucent layers to show glass and glossy structures to show metallic surfaces is amazing. I think that it would be a good exercise to try to go back, look at some of the images I have and try to draw from them more accurately.

This exhibition has inspired me to consider a new print collection that might be more fitting for the print application I am considering when designing shapes for my bag designs.
